Thank you to Division 11 for hosting Mrs.Powell’s friend Hillary. She came to visit the Grade 2s on Thursday to share about her experiences on the water as a Captain of a Whale Watching Tour. We were lucky to learn about the different creatures she has seen in her time on the water like different species of whales (orcas and humpback), seals and sea lions (no mermaids).

Arya from Division 13 asked “Do you have a machine that talks to whales?” What a great question from a possible future scientist or design engineer. On their tours Hillary told us that they have a special microphone that they can put into the water to hear the whales communicating.

Another student asked “Have you seen a whale that was mad?” Another great question! Hillary explained that it is hard to tell the emotions of whales but that she has seen them when they are hunting and that it was very interesting. She talked about how it is important to teach people how to be whale friendly. She talked about the videos of garbage and straws in the ocean and our need to help protect animals so that they can still exist. Things we can do like recycling and reducing our garbage and single use plastics are ways that Hillary reminded us we can help the Earth and the other animals that share our planet.

We learned that Hillary does her work as a Captain of Whale Watching tours and Marine Mammal Resource Centre with the Vancouver Aquarium because she loves animals. A big thank you to Hillary and Mrs. Powell. What a great chance for us to learn and inquire about jobs in our local community.

Inquiring into jobs during HWOO.
