Card Game – Making 10

In our grade 2 classes have been learning a new math game.

This is a matching game where the object of the game is to collect the most pairs.
In class we refer to the game as “Making 10“.

This game can be played with 2 or more players.

Step 1: Get a deck of cards and remove all of the “Face” cards and the 10s. You should have a deck of cards with Aces (1s), 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, & 9s.

Step 2: Lay all of the cards face down in a grid format.

Step 3: Decide who will go first. Decide who will go next.

Hint: when taking a turn make sure you turn over the card and lay it in the grid on the table/floor. Part of the strategy of this game is choosing 2 cards that add up to 10 but the other strategy is like most memory games – you need to know where the cards are.

Step 4: Turn face up 2 different cards – if they add up to 10 then you keep them. If they don’t add up then turn the cards over and let the next player have a turn.

Step 5: The player with the most pairs of 10 at the end of the game wins (or ties)!

If you have a deck of cards you can try out the game! If you need a deck of cards please connect with your classroom teacher.

  • Development of computational fluency in addition and subtraction with numbers to 100 requires an understanding of place value.
