Getting Diver in the water

HWOO – any grade 2-er at Queen Mary Community Elementary should be able to tell you all about our new unit of inquiry – How We Organize Ourselves.

Today we had an amazing presentation to start the unit with Mr. Martino. A huge thanks to him and his son Wyatt for hosting our learning engagement this morning.

We were inquiring into the job that Mr. Martino has with an underwater scuba dive team.

We learned about many different animals he has seen while underwater and the different locations in the world he has travelled to for his work.

Some of the type of work that Mr. Martino’s company does is: underwater maintenance, inspections, welding, burning, jetting, dredging.  Attached are some great videos and pictures we got to see. We even spoke to each other on a radio link on a communications line from a scuba diver’s helmet. The helmet weighs about 25 kilograms so we did not “try it on”. Well one student tried it on but she wasn’t “holding the weight!”

We have just set the schedule for about 10 other parents who will be sharing about their jobs with our classes as we investigate our community, our local government and how things are organized and connected.

Some good questions that Mr. Martino and many of our parents will answer are:

What is your job or career?

Why do you like your job?

How did you start in your job?

What allows you to do well at your job?

What are the important skills you have for your job?

Is your job part of the public or private sector? Where does the $$ come from?

How is your work place organized in terms of people?

What is the biggest change over time in the industry that you have noticed?

(Feel Free to share a memorable experience or story.)

There is still time! If you decide to come in to visit our Grade 2 classes to share about your job we can make time in our weekly schedule to accommodate your visit. Please discuss with your classroom teacher.
