Inquiring, learning and growing together

Week 1 Learning at Home

Welcome to our on-line learning community.

We have been working to choose a variety of appropriate learning engagements that our Grade 2 students will be able to use successfully and with some degree of independence.

We will be connecting with families in the coming days. While remote learning isn’t a perfect substitute for in-class instruction, there are lots of ways to keep our students engaged while they’re learning from home. Our goal is to offer familiar learning engagements for our students that are accessible and manageable.

Taking on the task of adapting to learning at home, both online and offline, is not something we want to do without consideration for what each family is going through. We have all had to deal with the end of normal routines, canceled activities, and diminished social connections.

We would like to begin with students working on their English Language Arts and Math.

If you are looking for more online learning, go to our Links page of our QME2 website.

English Language Arts

READING

We continue to encourage our students to read 20-30 minutes a day. Read a book, an article or a poem. Read to a mom, a dad, a sibling, a family pet or on Facetime/Zoom with a friend or family member! When reading with your child encourage them to sound out words and choose good-fit books.

Students can use one of our online reading programs from home. Every Grade 2 student has a Read Live account or a Raz Kids account. If your child is unsure of what account to use please contact your classroom teacher.

RAZ Kids Reading A – Z can be accessed from any device. If accessing from a smartphone, tablet or iPad, the Raz Kids app can be downloaded for free from the app store. If you require the login User name and Password information for your child’s active account please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Read Live by Read Naturally is a program that is available as a website from supported devices and as a free App for iPads (it cannot be accessed from smartphones). A Parent user guide, User Name & Password will be sent by classroom teachers. Students know their own User Name & Password to access their account.

WRITING

We encourage our Grade 2 students to write a few times a week. They could keep a personal journal about their ideas and thoughts or choose from this list:

  • Write a story (remember to think about a beginning, a middle and an end)
  • Write a list of groceries, steps in a recipe, items in your house
  • Research something you are interested in; write about it
  • Write the steps to doing or creating something
  • When reading a story in Read Live create a web of ideas that help you to write the Retell.

SPEAKING

  • Tell someone a story
  • Sing a song
  • Practice reading out loud

LISTENING

  • Tumble Books: Subscribe to Tumble Books, and listen to books red out loud online
  • Robert Munsch Books: Listen to Robert Munsch read his collection of books online
  • Listen to a parent or family member read out loud

Math and Numeracy

ONLINE

There are so many websites and programs and math apps that help students learn, no matter where they are. We have quite a few apps available, but we would like to start with one main math app and see how successful we can be. This program allows us to tailor the curriculum to each student’s individual learning needs.

Prodigy is a game-based math platform that keeps students engaged and excited to develop key math skills. Students explore an amazing world filled with adventure, where success depends on correctly answering math questions. Grade 2 Teachers have created Prodigy accounts for our students. We will contact you with user names & passwords or with a Class Code if you are already using the app. This game can be played on any device that has access to the internet. On iPhones and iPads it is an app.

OFFLINE

Card Games and board games offer some great math opportunities. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Uno
  • Monopoly
  • LIFE
  • Card Games – Making 10, Place Value War, Odd/Even War, Go Fish to make 10

If you are interested in working on Math worksheets, visit K5 website and download/print the ones you choose.
